U.S. Senate Youth ProgramThe United States Senate Youth Program, established in 1962 by U.S. Senate Resolution, is a unique educational experience for outstanding high school students interested in pursuing careers in public service. Two students from each state will be selected to attend the online program and each will receive a $10,000 undergraduate college scholarship. Students must attend the entirety of the program to receive the scholarship. The Texas United States Senate Youth Program is for high school students who demonstrate leadership and an interest in government. Students must be a junior or senior in High School. Interested students must be nominated by the high school principal and/or student council advisor. Interested students should inform their principal or student council advisor that they are interested in applying to the Texas US Senate Youth Program. Two high school juniors or seniors from Texas who hold elected or appointed positions of leadership are selected by the State Commissioner of Education to participate in the Senate Youth Program. This is a highly selective program; any student nominated should be an extremely strong leader with strong communication and interpersonal skills, the initiative to respond to group needs, above-average intelligence, and a great desire to participate in the American democratic processes. Principals and Student Council Advisors are asked to jointly nominate their most outstanding student to be considered by a state committee from the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals for nomination as a candidate for this program. Only one application per school will be accepted. Final decisions regarding nominations are subject to the judgement and verification of the state selection administrators. Texas students must submit the completed application and supporting documentation to TASSP/TASC. The primary purposes of the qualifying leadership position must be a representation of a constituency and service to others. A student who graduates high school at the close of the fall semester / quarter is not eligible to apply for the program. Only one application per school will be accepted.
